When people hear “speech therapist,” they often think of helping children say their R’s or S’s correctly. While that’s one part of what we do, the work of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) reaches far beyond that — impacting lives across every age and stage.
SLPs are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of communication and swallowing disorders. From helping a stroke survivor speak again, to supporting an aging adult with memory-related communication challenges, to guiding a child with autism in building social connection — our work centers on one of the most human experiences: connection through communication.
In medical settings, we help prevent aspiration and pneumonia by treating swallowing disorders. In schools, we empower students to express themselves confidently. In research, we push the boundaries of what we know about language, memory, and cognition.
At Pieta, we believe communication is not a luxury — it’s a right. And our SLPs are here to protect it, restore it, and celebrate every step forward.
So the next time you hear “SLP,” think beyond speech. Think of voice, memory, understanding, connection, and the dignity of being heard.
